The Hrafnkel's Saga (Hrafnkels saga Freysgoða) on Hallfreðr
The Story of Hrafnkell, Frey's Priest
attestation: Hallfreðr sailed to Iceland during the reign of King Harald Fairhair and settled in Breiðdal with his wife and fifteen-year-old son Hrafnkell.
"It was in the days of King Harold Fairhair that a man brought his ship to Iceland into Breiðdal, his name being Hallfreðr. Breiðdal is a countryside down below that of Fljótsdalr. On board his ship was his wife and son, who was hight Hrafnkell, who was then fifteen winters old"
attestation: A dream warned Hallfreðr to move west across Lagarfljót, where his good luck awaited him.
"One night he dreamt that there came a man to him, and said: "There liest thou, Hallfreðr, and rather unwarily; flit thy house away west across the Lagarfljót, for there all thy good luck awaits thee.""
attestation: Hallfreðr relocated to a place thereafter called Hallfreðr-staðir, where he lived into old age.
"he flitted his belongings down valley across Rangá, into the Tongue, to a spot, which has since been called Hallfreðr-staðir, and there he dwelt into a good old age"
attestation: Hallfreðr discovered a new, drier road above the fells of Fljótsdalr to make travel between him and his son easier, which became known as Hallfreðr's Gate.
"Hallfreðr thought the common way was too difficult of passing, so he sought for a new road above the fells, which stand in the country-sides of Fljótsdalr, where he found a drier one, although a longer, which ever since has been called the "gate" of Hallfreðr."
