The mistress of Sandhaugar "went as usual to spend Yule at Eyjardalsa" (Grettir's Saga, Chapter LXIV), and it was "nearly dark by the time he got home to Sandhaugar" after events on the road (Grettir's Saga, Chapter LXIV). The site is part of the landscape of supernatural encounters in the saga's Bardardal sequence.
