Mist is a Valkyrie whose name is the same as the English word "mist." The Poetic Edda explains that Mist's "horse" — the earth — is what the mist rides, providing an etymological and mythological connection between the natural phenomenon and the divine figure (Poetic Edda, Volume II, Notes).
The Poetic Edda provides the sole attestation in a note that simultaneously identifies Mist as a Valkyrie and interprets her name through a characteristic kenning: the earth is mist's "horse" because mist travels over the ground (Poetic Edda, Volume II, Notes).
