Ljot
Kinsman of Hall of the Side, killed by an anonymous spear-cast at the Battle of the Althing.
Ljot is attested in Njal's Saga as a figure killed during the Battle at the Althing. A spear hurled from the band of Gudmund the Powerful struck Ljot in the middle, killing him instantly, and the slayer was never identified (Njal's Saga, 144. Battle At The Althing).
Njal's Saga provides the sole attestation for Ljot, and it is notable for the anonymity of his death. In a saga tradition that typically names killers and tracks the consequences of each slaying, Ljot dies from an unattributed spear-cast — "it was never known surely who had done that manslaughter" (Njal's Saga, 144. Battle At The Althing). This narrative detail emphasizes the chaotic nature of the battle at the Althing, where the normal legal and social mechanisms for assigning responsibility broke down amid mass violence.
