Hjort was Gunnar's brother, attested in Njal's Saga as one who rode with Gunnar into danger (Njal's Saga, Ch. 60). When enemies agreed on an attack against Gunnar, Hjort accompanied him, and in the ensuing violence "Hjort fell down dead on the spot" (Njal's Saga, Ch. 62). His death gives its name to the chapter in which it occurs -- "The Slaying of Hjort and Fourteen Men" -- marking the episode as a significant escalation in the feud cycle surrounding Gunnar.
Hjort was the brother of Gunnar and fought alongside him (Njal's Saga, Ch. 60).
