Hakon the Great is attested in the Heimskringla as the progenitor of a notable Norwegian dynasty. His descendants in Norway "were remarkable for their very beautiful appearance, and the most of them were gifted with great bodily perfection, and were all distinguished and important men" (Heimskringla, Ch. 42). The Haleygjatal, a genealogical poem composed by Eyvind Skaldaspiller, traces his lineage through Saeming back to Freyr (or Yngvefrey).

Hakon the Great's lineage connects him to some of the most significant figures in Norse tradition. His ancestry is traced to Freyr through Saeming, as recorded in the Haleygjatal. His descendants included Orm, Earl Orm, Ivar, and Kyrpingaorm.
