Gouvernail is the faithful servant and companion of Sir Tristram, attested across 10 citations in Le Morte d'Arthur spanning Books VIII and X. He serves as squire, attendant, and witness throughout Tristram's adventures, from the battle with Sir Marhaus through the encounter with Sir Launcelot at the peron.
Gouvernail first appears alerting Tristram to Marhaus's arrival -- "Sir, said Gouvernail, see ye him not?" (Le Morte d'Arthur, Book VIII, Chapter VI). After the battle, he came with Tristram's vessel while "the king and his barons came with procession against him" (Book VIII, Chapter VIII). He carried messages and offered counsel, as when he reported to Tristram that Queen Isoud "is put in a lazar-cote" (Book VIII, Chapter XXXV), prompting Tristram's rescue mission.
The text notes that Tristram was sometimes so absorbed in thought "he heard not what Gouvernail said" (Book VIII, Chapter XXXI), a detail that characterises both Tristram's intensity and Gouvernail's persistent presence. When Gouvernail departed, the narrative marks the moment: "So they departed all save Gouvernail" (Book VIII, Chapter XXXV).
In Book X, Gouvernail accompanies Tristram on the road, riding alongside him after he took leave of a widow (Book X, Chapter IV). After Tristram's combat with Launcelot at the peron, Gouvernail expressed wonder at the exchange of blows: "O Lord Jesu, said Gouvernail, I marvel greatly of the strokes my master hath given to your master" (Book X, Chapter V).
All citations derive from Le Morte d'Arthur. Gouvernail's role is consistently that of the loyal attendant whose function is to observe, report, and serve. He never fights independently; his value lies in his constancy and his role as a sounding board for Tristram's adventures. The citations distribute across eight chapters, indicating that Gouvernail is present throughout the Tristram narrative rather than confined to a single episode.
