Gothland appears in the Gesta Danorum as a region subject to invasion and political contest. Snio invaded Gothland to avenge a death (Gesta Danorum, Book Eight), and later Ragnar, hearing of local arrogance from the earls of Sweden, Kelther and Thorkill, made "a hasty voyage towards Gothland" (Gesta Danorum, Book Nine).
