Caxton is attested in Le Morte d'Arthur's Bibliographical Note as the printer who prepared the text for publication. "Caxton finished his edition the last day of July 1485" (Le Morte d'Arthur, Bibliographical Note). The history of the text's transmission passes through Caxton's edition as a pivotal moment: while Stansby's later edition served for reprints in 1816 and 1856, "in 1817 an edition supervised by Robert Southey went back to Caxton's text" (Le Morte d'Arthur, Bibliographical Note), establishing the Caxton text as the authoritative version to which later editors returned.
