Bruide Mac Meilcon was king of the Northern Picts who died in 584. The Orkneyinga Saga records that before his death, "the new and rising power of the Dalriadic kings had made itself felt as far as the Orkneys" (The Orkneyinga Saga, I. Earliest Historical Notices of the Orkneys). His reign thus marks a period of transition in the northern power balance, with Dalriadic influence expanding into territories previously under Pictish control.
Bruide Mac Meilcon is connected to Orkney, Cormac, St. Columba, and the Picts. His association with St. Columba reflects the Christianization of Pictish territories during this period.
